: “Can Tongue Twister Improve Student’s Speaking Fluency?”


1.      Introduction
Now days, anything improves fast includes education treatment to students in solving problem of learning. The example of the problem is students often memorize vocabulary or sentences traditionally, no fun rhythms, of course it’s difficult and may be boring for some students but through tongue twister hopefully it can fresh their way in memorizing as a fun method. Therefore, writer compiles a main idea which contains a smart solution, collaborate some abilities such as memorizing and speaking, to develop their ability with saying words fast and correctly, Tongue Twister. By this idea, students and teachers are hoped to be able to learn and develop English with various methods and a fun way. 
Alex, states that tongue twisters are a kind of spoken wordplay which are joyful and challenging to read and a very good method for children’s language development (Tongue twisters n.d). It is a similar sound that is pronounced rapidly without tripping over the tongue and it is very challenging.
Besides, tongue twister can help in better understanding which is good for memorizing vocabulary while saying words as fast as possible. As stated by Christopher Bergland that found a brain function based on the comparison of two types of tongue twisters will help better understand the specific brain connectivity behind the complex timing and syncopation needed to speak a language (Quirky Brain n.d.).. In addition, it will help to speak fluently and clearly because now days, students are so shy in practicing their English then it influents them in their speaking such as slow in conversation, not really fluent, then I want through this method, students will more confident because they will use to practice tongue twister which can influence the way in saying and speech articulation because of saying words fast and also correctly. ZeharaJabeen stated that Tongue Twisters constitute diction/articulation exercises which help you learn how to speak clearly (a better speaker n.d)
Using tongue twisters strategy in learning process is very important to improve students’ vocabulary and fluency of speaking ability. That’s way I choose Tongue Twister because it is fun method and has many advantages, as stated above, and it is still unknown well around us.  So, Tongue Twister in learning strategy is powerful capacity and to help them in learning with fun way.

B. Problem Statements

In this technological era, many ways student can learn from till how to do it clearly from media such as Google and You-tube. But ironically, some strategies of teaching used are traditional ones. Then, writer formulates the research question that whether tongue twisters can become an effective strategy to improve the students’ speaking fluency. So, they can speak out bravely and fluently.

C. Reason of the Study
There are many ways in delivering materials to improve English skills especially in speaking. One of them is using Tongue Twister. It’s very useful method because we can practice how saying words to words fluently and correctly. So, it naturally gives a stimulation to speak out fluently. Then, the writer formulates the research reason about Implementation a new method in learning for fluency of speaking by Tongue Twister, an interesting way of method in learning.

D. Objective of the Study
According to questions formulated above, the aims of this research are to investigate that tongue twisters can be an effective strategy to increase the students’ speaking fluency.
E. Literature Review
            1. Theories of Tongue Twister
Tongue twister is a word or phrases that are difficult to say quickly or correctly (Oxford). It besides for fun and game, is actually one of a practical ways to improve language especially in speaking.. For example, tongue twisters can be a choice for foreign student in improving their accent and speech and a tool for helping them in speech difficulties such as to target articulation; student has a trouble in saying F which always sounds like P. we can use tongue twister for practicing as speech therapist in their improvement. Here are some tips to use tongue twister as stated by Alex (Tongue Twisters .n.d) as below
Tips to use tongue twisters for developing speech (speaking)
  • Start reciting the tongue twisters at a slow pace and ensure it is able to be recited clearly
  • The next step would be to know the tongue twister by heart.
  • Repeat the tongue twister as fast as possible until it is mastered and able to be recited three times in a row without stumbling.
  • When one tongue twister is mastered, try another.
According to tips above, we can provide some tongue twisters start from the easy one till the difficult ones. Then, start reading slow and clear several times. After that fell it and understand it in order to know the meaning and will not very confused. The following, repeat it as fast and clear as possible. If it is done well, try the upper level.
2.      Theories of Speaking Fluency
Mastering speaking skills in English isa major goal for many second or foreign
Language learners. Learners mostly often evaluate their success in
language learning skills how good they have improved in their spoken language.( Jack C. Richards)

F. Discussion
A various strategies and methods of teaching are really needed such as tongue twisters to support students’ improvement through something fun because they mostly like a fun and joyful methods in learning.

CONCLUSION

From the explanation above, the writer can conclude that tongue twister can be a simple way for improving students’ speaking fluency. It offers an interesting way in words repetition for the students. Also, tongue twister can support in speech therapist for pronouncing clear words in English. Good impact from tongue twister will have a great impact too for their improvement especially in speaking fluency.
