example of an opinion column “What I learn in school today”, about pronunciation.

Task       :  an opinion column
“What I learn in school today”

Strange but Cozy

Talking about learning English, it does not only relate to grammar, speaking, or listening but also how to pronounce the words correctly, pronunciation. It becomes one of the big problems in learning English because what is pronounced is so different from the word which makes many students are annoyed and confused in learning, such as the word “Island”, omitted “S” in pronouncing, and many others. It is stated that It will become dangerous thing and make misunderstanding if we pronounce them incorrect moreover to native speakers (Why You Should, n.d.). Those all are different from I felt when I joined in a short program of Mercu Buana English Community. I learned many things especially about Pronunciation, a strange lesson, which makes me happy, confident and great. Here are some factors.

First, it is fun which made me happy. We always kept pronouncing and also much laughing because when we pronounced the listed words on the book, we mostly did wrong in pronouncing words. Especially when we read one page of listed words but at a quarter of the last part we did a mistake then we have to repeat it again and again from the beginning. What a tiring class it was! Everybody kept laughing because of it but we still enjoyed it. In another hand, it actually made the class joyful and nice as stated that laughing is able to have and build a good connection. Also It can move a chilly situation to a warm one, full of familiarity2 (7 Health Benefits n.d.)

Second, it also influenced me to be confident and kept trying because making mistakes is normal. It meant that every student was right even did mistakes. When some of our friends did mistake, they reason that “we’re students, doing mistakes is ok!” so they always pretended to be right person when they did mistake. In addition, about their pronunciation including local accent, they felt free and confident in pronouncing every words because they feel that everyone has their own pronunciation, so don’t blame each other’s! Even though, their accent is different but actually their pronunciation is incorrect. They just admit those are the same. What strange it is!

And the last, mastering pronunciation well and having a good accent are able to be great point for us. It’s because at first, listeners will value what we pronounced is good or bad. When in conversation, although our speaking is not really fluent but we have a great pronunciation, it’s impressing enough.  As stated by Tomasz P. Szynalski that pronunciation is the major thing which is seen in conversation mostly (Why You Should, n.d.). So, when we have a conversation, people who talk to us they won’t notice how good our grammar or rich our vocabulary are but they will do notice to our pronunciation.

That’s all that I learned in pronunciation class which made me happy, confident, and great. Whatever we learn, either like or nor, just enjoy it because sometimes what we don’t like but it’s needed for us.
